Lesson: As I was reading through this book, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the times that Ezekiel was living in and the times that we are living in now. I can’t say that we have it worse than Ezekiel, far from it, but, what I can say is that we can see wickedness all around us. It shows its ugly head in many forms.

Ezekiel gives harsh words to the people, that they have become idolaters. They believe that power, war, and wealth will bring peace. They neglect the most vulnerable in their society. They have a moral blindness.

Prophets have a habit of speaking condemnation and spouting doom on societies and they do so rightly. However, they don’t end with doom and gloom. Images of sidewalk doomsday preachers come to mind when reading about prophets. I can imagine signs that say, ‘the end is near.’ While this is true that we do get a lot of that from these prophets we are not left in the pit of despair. After all they say about how wicked the human heart and the actions of man are, they end with hope.

600 years after Ezekiel cries out that we are morally bankrupt, Jesus shows up. He says, “destroy this temple and I will raise it up in three days.” John 2:19. They thought that Jesus was going to rebuild the temple of stone and gold, but the temple is his body. Jesus’ ministry, as it remains today, is that of hope. It is as good of news back then as it is today.

So, while we watch the news and peruse social media we can’t help but see doom and gloom. Nothing but bad news. Remember that prophets don’t end with bad news, they end with hope. This hope can be found in nothing else but Jesus Christ.

Discussion: Do prophets still speak to us today? Who are they? What injustices do you see today that need corrected?

worship zone.png

Worship: Dear Lord, Cover our world with your hand. Right every wrong. Help us to see the injustice in the world and show us where we need to act to correct it. Bring peace to our broken land. Change evil hearts. Guide and protect our Godly leaders. Remove the leaders who continue to neglect the most vulnerable. Help us all to know you and seek first the kingdom of God. Amen.
